Privacy policy

1. Who we are

FOMO is run by VentureBox PTY LTD, South Africa (“we”, “us”). We're responsible for your personal information under the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA). For any privacy question or request, email hello@officialfomo.app.

2. What we collect

• Account: your email address, or your Apple or Google sign-in if you use Continue with Apple or Continue with Google.
• Profile: your name, profile colour and, if you add them, a profile photo and banner.
• Age check: your date of birth and country, used only to check you're of legal drinking age. We never show it on your profile.
• What you post: scheduled events, Sips, roll photos and videos, comments, reactions, votes (like the MVP vote), game scores and answers, specials, and drinks you choose to log.
• Your people: friends, circles, invites and who you've blocked. If you add friends from your contacts, you pick which contacts to share. We never see your whole address book.
• FOMO+: if you subscribe, whether you have FOMO+, your plan and when it renews, which Apple or Google tell us. Also the accent colour, app icon and other FOMO+ settings you choose.
• Location: only as described in the next section.
• Reports you make or that are made about content you posted.
• Basic technical information such as device type, app version and error logs, so we can keep the app working.

3. Location

• We only use your location while you're in an event you started or joined. When the event ends for you, tracking stops.
• We record stops (places you stay about 15 minutes), not a continuous route.
• Private places, like someone's home, never leave your phone. Friends only ever see an area, never an address or pin.
• When you post a Sip, its place is shared with your friends for 24 hours, and your own map remembers it.

Location, camera, photo and contacts access are always your choice. You can turn them off at any time in your phone's settings.

4. How we use your information

• To run FOMO's features: circles, scheduled events, events, the roll, games, recaps, Sips and the map.
• To provide FOMO+ if you subscribe, and check your subscription is active.
• To check your age when you sign up.
• To keep people safe: reviewing reports, enforcing our Terms, and preventing misuse.
• To fix problems, improve the app, and answer you when you contact us.
• When the law requires it.

We process your information to provide the service you signed up for, with your consent (for example location and camera access), for our legitimate interest in keeping FOMO safe, and to meet legal obligations.

5. Who sees what

• Your posts are seen by the friends and circles you choose, never the public.
• Roll photos stay hidden from everyone, including how many there are, until the roll develops. The people who were there review it before it posts.
• Sips disappear after 24 hours. Specials are gone at 06:00.
• Game scores, answers and votes, and the recap of an event, are seen by the people who were in that event.
• If you have FOMO+, your friends see the FOMO+ badge and your banner on your profile. They don't see your plan.
• Other people never see which circles you're in or pick.
• People you block can't see you, your content or your invites, and you won't see theirs.

6. Who we share it with

We don't sell your information and we don't show ads. We only share it with services that help us run FOMO, under agreements that require them to protect it:

• Supabase, which hosts our database, file storage and sign-in.
• Mapbox, which draws the maps in the app.
• Apple, if you use Sign in with Apple, download FOMO from the App Store, or buy FOMO+ there.
• Google, if you use Sign in with Google, download FOMO from Google Play, or buy FOMO+ there.
• An email service that sends your sign-in codes.

Some of these providers store information outside South Africa. When that happens we make sure it's protected to the standard POPIA requires. We'll also share information if the law requires it, or to protect someone's safety.

7. How long we keep it

We keep your information while your account is open. If you delete your account (Settings in the app), we remove your profile, photos, videos, check-ins, comments and ratings for good, and copies in our backups are cleared on a rolling basis. Deleting your account doesn't cancel FOMO+: cancel it in your app store account. We keep records of FOMO+ purchases for as long as tax and accounting law requires. We may keep a record of reports and safety decisions for as long as needed to keep FOMO safe or to meet legal requirements.

8. Your rights

Under POPIA you can ask us to:

• Tell you what personal information we hold about you, and give you a copy.
• Correct or update it.
• Delete it, or stop using it for a particular purpose.
• Withdraw consent you've given, such as for location.

Email hello@officialfomo.app and we'll respond as soon as we can. If you're not happy with how we've handled your information, you can complain to the Information Regulator of South Africa at inforegulator.org.za.

FOMO is only for people 18 and older. If we learn that someone under 18 has an account, we'll delete it.

9. This website

This website doesn't use tracking cookies, analytics or ads. Our fonts and images are served from our own site. The animated logo uses a small free player (Lottie) loaded from cdnjs, a public code library run by Cloudflare, and our host Netlify keeps standard server logs. Like any website request, these services see your IP address and browser type.

10. Changes to this policy

If we change how we handle your information in a meaningful way, we'll tell you in the app before it applies. The date at the top shows when this policy last changed.
